What is the difference between a flyer and a leaflet?

If you’ve ever needed something printed to promote your business, an event, or even just to spread the word locally, chances are you’ve come across both leaflets and flyers. And if you’re anything like most people I speak to, you’ve probably wondered, ‘Are they not the the same thing?’

Its a really common question I get asked as a designer, so in this post, I’m breaking it down in simple terms. What actually is the difference between a leaflet and a flyer? And when should you use each?

So, what is a flyer?

A flyer is usually a single sheet of paper (often A5 or A6 size) thats designed to catch attention quickly. Think of it as a fast, eye-catching way to share something like:

  • A sale or special offer

  • An upcoming event

  • A new shop or service launch

  • Flyers tend to be bold and straight to the point. They’re often handed out in the street, pinned up in cafés or shops, or slipped through letterboxes.

In a nutshell:

  •  Short and punchy

  •  Made for mass distribution

  •  Not meant to last forever

They’re the kind of thing someone might glance at, make a mental note, and then (let’s be honest) toss in the recycling once it’s served its purpose.

And What About a Leaflet?

A leaflet is also a single sheet but it usually goes a bit further than a flyer. It’s often folded (bi-fold or tri-fold, for example), and it’s designed to give more information.

Leaflets are perfect for:

  •  Explaining your services

  •  Sharing a price list or menu

  •  Giving a mini overview of your brand

They usually feel a little more premium i.e thicker paper, more structured design, and something people are more likely to keep or refer back to.

In a nutshell:

  •  More detailed

  •  Often folded

  •  Used for branding or education

Lets see a quick comparison.

     Flyer                                            Leaflet

Purpose            Quick promotion                 Detailed info

Paper.                Thin, basic stock.                 Usually better quality

Folded?             Rarely                                        Often (bi/tri-fold)

Content              Short & snappy                    More in-depth

Lifespan            Short-term use                     Longer-term reference

When Should You Use Each?

If you’re promoting a one-off event, trying to drive quick attention, or doing a mass handout, go with a flyer.

If you want to explain what you do, showcase your services, or give people something to take away and keep, go for a leaflet.

From a Designer’s Point of View…

As someone who designs both flyers and leaflets regularly, I always say: it’s not just about the format. It’s about the purpose. The right choice can make a big difference in how people respond to your message.
